The Brecon Beacons and Radnor Loop a 75 mile circular trail ride through Mid Wales |

Brecon Beacons and Radnor Loop Schematic map |

The Brecon Beacons and Radnor Loop was created by us after guests expressed the wish to ride a longer circular route through this part of Wales, along the principles of the Mary Towneley Loop. The route has now been ridden many times over the last years and after feedback from guests, we have tweaked the route a little and it has proved very successful. To our surprise horse/mountain bike combination (husband and wife) works really well on the Loop! We wanted to make best use of the stunning scenery in the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Radnor Hills and the Eppynt and set about exploring nice routes for horse riders in this part of Wales. We think we have created a lovely, 4 day trail ride for horse riders who want to come riding in Wales, riding from horse and rider B&B to B&B over a variety of terrain, using bridleways, hills, open moorland and quiet country lanes. To make this work we have linked up with friends near Talgarth or Tregoyd Mountain Riders at the edge of the Black Mountains for day 2, Rhosgoch in the Radnorshire hills for day 3 and at Lower Chapel on the edge of the Eppynt for day 4, who offer similar bed and breakfast facilities for horse and rider. We will liaise with the other B&Bs for availability, saving you multiple phone calls.

The suggested route Starting from The Wern, where you can leave your transport, you ride on the hills circumnavigating Llangorse Lake before crossing into the foothills of the Black Mountains. Just before reaching the river Wye you reach your accommodation for the first night. The second day takes you across the river Wye, which you will follow before riding up onto the Begwns and open moorland owned by the National Trust. The Radnor hills are the next landmark where you make your second B&B stop. The third day sees you ride along the southern ridge of the Radnor hills, on old drovers roads, re-cross the river Wye and then ride over more open hill, common and forestry before making your last overnight stop at Lower Chapel. On the last day you head south and then east, on a linked series of bridleways, ride through Brecon and pass Brecon Castle via quiet back lanes, before taking bridleways and lanes back to the Wern. As the 3rd day goes over open moorland with few distinguishing landmarks and multiple tracks which change with use, we advise that you need to be able to navigate in case the clouds come down, using a compass in conjunction with the maps, ( a GPS can be useful too). We provide a luggage transfer between the B&Bs if required. If you would like we can ride with you for the day as a guide to save you doing the navigating, subject to availability. Please ensure horses are well shod. A farrier can be arranged but not necessarily immediately a shoe is lost as he covers a large area. We therefore suggest, as a shoe can always be lost, that you carry an equiboot or similar as part of your first aid kit.
