We moved here to what was to become our B&B for horses from Suffolk in 1987, to a basically derelict house with overgrown, cattle poached land surrounded by one strand of barbed wire. The story about moving day is worth hearing—we’ll tell it to you while you’re here! Since then we have gradually reworked and extended the house, fenced off the land into a series of manageable paddocks, laid hedges, built a barn and stables and created the garden. Oh, and of course we have found time to live life a little. Actually what I was after was somewhere with a couple of acres where I could keep my horse at home, after years of renting fields while my husband was in the RAF. The problem was that all we could get was either a large garden or 25 acres. So, we bit the bullet and bought the 25 acres. Problem is once you’ve got the land you have to do something with it so I did a sheep management course, (lambing practice on a plastic ewe), and we started keeping sheep. In not very long we found ourselves leading the ‘good life’, with sheep, chickens, ducks, home grown veg and of course lamb for the freezer. Our son was 7 when we moved here and growing up in this environment obviously had some effect: he’s now 28, a qualified vet who is currently a captain in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, just back from Iraq, Afghanistan and Kenya. I have 2 horses of my own. My old black mare, Tempest, who was responsible for us coming here in the first place, was put down at the age of 32 earlier this year, and now I have my brood mare, Sunny, who has raised several nice foals for me, and a lovely Fell pony mare, Velvet, which I bought in December 2007. We have two collies, Ben and Megan, to help with the sheep, (and because we like dogs), and 4 cats. The dogs live outside, in their own luxury accommodation, insulated with Kingspan. Above the door is a sign; “Cave Canem”, (beware of the dog), copied from a mosaic found in Pompeii. |
